...A Few More Things for 2026

In addition to two main Capital-R Resolutions, I have a few more things that I want to do (or do more of) in 2026 that don't rise to the level of a Resolution, but are still worth thinking about. And blogging about it seems.

  1. More Degrees! Get better with wider-angle lenses in making photos. I am at my most comfortable with 50mm lenses (or equivalent: 75/80mm on 120) and quite at home with portrait lenses (85mm, 100mm), but, for the most part, the wider-angle views have been elusive. I have 28mm lenses in my collection and, as of yesterday, have added a lovely 24mm f/2.8 for my Nikkormat.

Why Would That Be?

If I am being honest with myself, it's not entirely a matter of never having developed an eye for it, or any technical matter. In most cases, the well-composed wider-angle photos I have in mind were made in clos(er) proximity to the subject. Being a little reserved and passive (I'm a marshmallow), I've always been hesitant.

  1. More Novelty Earrings! When I came out in 2022, one of the first things I wanted to do was get my ears pierced. It's quite easy and often somewhere near the top of the list for many transfemmes. My body wasn't quite as up for it as my mind was, and, well, I'll just say that healing was a journey. While any earrings were good, my real goal was to be able to wear very cute, but very stupid novelty earrings! Since it seems that my ears are very much properly healed this time, 2026 can be the year of chickens, cheese, hamburgers, and other fun things dangling from my ears!

  2. More Ticketty-Tick! I decided earlier this year that in cases where paper letters are either required (the last 5% of changing my name) or preferable (like, for example, sending letters to MPPs and MPs concerning trans rights), that these letters will be typewritten. We have a nice Olympia SM8 here and I like using it! Now, to just purchase some more appropriate paper for these letters. The 20lb copy paper we feed the printer just seems so ...unceremonious.

  3. More Chemistry! I made some pretty great strides in 2025 to expand my experience with film development! In February, it was my first use of C-41, and by the end of the fall, I successfully developed in E6! In 2026, I intend to keep the ball rolling with ECN-2.

  4. More Linuxy Things! Admittedly, I've been browsing a small handful of Mastodon accounts lately for tips, tricks, and inspiration in the things I'd like to do with my computing. I still don't think I want to participate in social media things, but I'd also by lying if I didn't admit that I find a meeting place of dorkdom and transsexuals more than a little compelling. Although I'm quite happy with my current setup, there are so many things calling to me, so who knows? Jump back in?

  5. More People! I also want to do more things with people. Like, more specifically, more photographic things with people. It's a bit scary, and will likely remind why I stopped in the first place. On the other hand, I do miss things like photowalks and other similar events. After seeing Kathleen "talk shop" at the fabric store recently and attending the Q&A chat at the National Gallery and leaving the chattier ends of social media, I could use a little more of the social!

It looks like 2026 will be a year of more!
